Vehicle Test Engineer (Rail) - Part-Time

About the Role 

Virginkar & Associates, Inc. (VAI) is seeking a Vehicle Test Engineer to join our team for a project in Boston, MA. The ideal candidate will have an overall understanding of rail vehicle operation, test practices, and the ability to operate vehicle tests to support the customer’s schedule. Must have prior Rail Vehicle experience as it pertains to the project, and extensive working knowledge of Rail Vehicles. Specific experience with systems integration, train control, and/or working with a rail carbuilder a plus. 

Key Responsibilities 

Responsibilities include interfacing with the contractor and client and writing reports documenting inspections and work performed, including: 

  • Witnessing testing includes overseeing vehicle testing and qualification test activities of carborne train control kits. 

  • Witnessing static and dynamic functional testing. 

  • Interpreting plans, specifications, and other contract documents for compliance with the work. 

  • Assisting Resident Inspector in review of test reports & other project related activities. 

  • Communicating with the prime consultant for non-TS conformance, engineering issues, status of approval, test witnessing and/or status, etc. 

  • Reviewing contractor’s work plans, drawings and installation procedures, and test procedures. 

  • Preparing and submitting proper documentation upon completion of inspections, including electronic records and digital photographs, and maintaining file management and organization. 

Qualifications 

  • 3-10 years Quality Assurance / Rail Project experience. 

  • B.S. degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering. 

  • QC/QA background in manufacturing environment. 

  • Ability to read and interpret work instructions and drawings. 

  • Ability to create MS Word documents and embed photos with clear and concise  

        descriptions. 

  • Must be computer literate and proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. 

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.  

  • Familiarity with the Railroad and Transit Industry Standards. 

  • High ethical standards, attention to detail, and commitment to team collaboration.
